Nationals Use Draft For Future Balance

Carter Kieboom sounds familiar. Like he has been part of the Washington Nationals' family for some time.

Well, sorta. The Nationals selected the Georgia high school infielder 28th overall in the Major League Baseball Draft June 9. He's the younger brother of Spencer Kieboom, a rising catcher in the Nationals' farm system at Double-A Harrisburg.

Given four of the Nats' last seven first-rounders are now starters, it's not a stretch to one day expect the switch-hitting Carter Kieboom, who also pitches left- and right-handed, to play shortstop or third while Spencer is behind the plate. After all, the Nationals already have one brother combination in the works. Right fielder Bryce Harper's brother, Bryan, is a reliever at Triple-A Syracuse.
