The Washington Nationals selected 41 players during the 40-round MLB First-Year Player Draft June 9-11. Among the picks were two first-round selections, Walton High School (Ga.) shortstop Carter Kieboom (28th overall) and Florida right-handed pitcher Dane Dunning (29th overall).
Jim Callis was part of MLB Network's draft broadcast and is a draft and prospect expert for MLB.com and MLBPipeline.com. He spoke with PressBoxDC.com about the Nationals' selections and the team's minor league system overall.
PressBox: What did you think of the Nationals' back-to-back selections of Kieboom and Dunning at Nos. 28 and 29?
Jim Callis: I like both of those guys. We didn't have them rated quite that high on our list, which doesn't really mean anything because you got to factor in signability, too. Kieboom, I think he probably moves to third base down the road, but I thought he was one of the best bats in high school anywhere. He's got some bat speed and some loft, average power. I think he really profiles well at third base. I do like him.
