ED-1 Supervisor J.T. Davis says “we have the vertical assets and the fiber network” to guarantee broadband access to rural Halifax County at negligible or no additional cost to taxpayers — and he wants a request for proposals out to potential wireless internet service providers (WISPs) by early fall.
During a meeting of the broadband ad hoc committee Wednesday morning, the Halifax County Board of Supervisors vice chairman discussed the county’s role in what would be a public-private partnership between the locality and the WISP selected to provide broadband access. He said that role would most likely be eliminated.
The county might provide a jumpstart with a small initial investment, but Davis envisions customer revenues driving the process sooner rather than later.
