Gary Nunes

For only the second time in its 15-year history, Womble Carlyle’s Northern Virginia office has a new Managing Partner.

Gary Nunes, a veteran trial lawyer in the Northern Virginia/D.C. region, is now the Office Managing Partner, effective July 1st.  He replaces Dan Mackesey, who has led the Northern Virginia office since it opened in 2001. Mackesey will remain at the firm as a Partner on the Real Estate Team.

Nunes has more than 25 years’ experience in complex commercial litigation and white collar criminal defense matters. He has tried over 50 jury trials in federal and state courts. His firm leadership experience includes serving on the Northern Virginia Office Management Committee and as Team Leader of Womble Carlyle’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group. Nunes has been a Partner in the firm’s Northern Virginia office since its 2001 formation.

“Gary is a proven leader within the firm, and a familiar face in Northern Virginia legal circles,” said Womble Carlyle Chair & CEO Betty Temple. “We are pleased to have his leadership in this important role, and we are thrilled that Dan, who has served this office so well, will remain with the firm.”

Nunes said, “Northern Virginia is a dynamic, growing market, with a strong focus on technology, government contracting and international business. Womble Carlyle, with our recent global partnership with U.K. firm Bond Dickinson, is well-positioned to serve companies in this market.”

“It has been an honor to have been entrusted with the leadership of the office and such quality people and lawyers,” Mackesey said. “Gary is an excellent choice and will bring a fresh perspective and great leadership to the role.  I am really looking forward to being able to focus more fully on clients and their needs.”
