Junior Galette became a Washington Redskins legend without ever playing a snap.
The Washington linebacker will miss his second straight season since signing with the Redskins last summer with his second torn Achilles tendon, this time in his right leg. Galette was injured during a drill July 24 while preparing for training camp, which opens July 28. Last year, Galette suffered a torn left Achilles before the first preseason game.
Normally, it's preseason reserve quarterbacks, like Babe Laufenberg and Colt Brennan, who are remembered fondly despite never reaching September. But Galette was a proven NFL veteran who was expected to start both seasons for Washington.
It's bad luck for the Redskins and even worse for Galette, whose NFL career is probably finished before re-starting in Washington. Indeed, Galette was so excited to play for the Redskins that his shoulder now bears a team tattoo.
