As Maryland football head coach DJ Durkin approached the podium at 11 a.m. Aug. 16 for his first media day press conference, the first few questions headed his way mostly centered around one position: quarterback.
Durkin inherits an offense that averaged fewer than 175 yards a game through the air last year, but more troubling than that, one that struggled to settle on one passer. And no matter who the former coaching staff had at quarterback, turnovers were an issue. Maryland quarterbacks threw 29 interceptions in 12 games, 28 of which came from holdovers Perry Hills and Caleb Rowe, both seniors.
The Terps have 10 practices under their belt in fall camp, but Durkin still isn't shedding much light on if he's leaning toward any particular passer ahead of the team's Sept. 3 opener against Howard. Though Rowe has been sidelined with an injury of late, he's still in the competition, along with Hills, redshirt freshman Gage Shaffer and true freshmen Tyrell Pigrome and Max Bortenschlager.
