John Wanda

The Caring Institute to Recognize Wide-Ranging Efforts to Improve Education in Uganda

CCAH, a full-service direct marketing firm serving global nonprofit organizations, is proud to announce that John Wanda, vice president of finance, and his wife, Joyce, are winners of the National Caring Award presented annually by The Caring Institute. John and Joyce will join four others in receiving this honor at a ceremony to be held on Saturday, October 22, 2016, at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Hotel in Orlando, Florida.

Founded by Val J. Halamandaris in 1985 to promote the values of caring, integrity and public service, The Caring Institute believes that most of the world’s problems can be solved by individuals who devote their lives to serving others, especially the disadvantaged, poor, disabled and dying. In selecting the Wandas for this prestigious accolade, the Institute cited John and Joyce’s tireless dedication to improving education for underprivileged Ugandan children through the Arlington Academy of Hope (AAH), which they helped found in 2004. John and Joyce, themselves natives of Eastern Uganda, emigrated to the United States to start a new life. Seeking to give back to their homeland, they saw AAH as a means to provide Ugandan children both a good education and basic healthcare. When the Academy first opened its doors to 78 students, it became the only school in the region using American models of education. Today, AAH is a broad-based nonprofit impacting tens of thousands annually with improved education, healthcare and economic development opportunities.

Kim Cubine, president of CCAH, said, “We could not be prouder of John and Joyce. Their passion for giving back, as evidenced by the work of the Arlington Academy of Hope, is truly an inspiration to us all. Through their tireless efforts, John and Joyce have turned a dream into a reality that is making a major difference in the lives of many. It is only fitting that their hard work and dedication would place them in the same category as past award honorees such as the Dalai Lama, Rabbi Grossman, Pope Francis and Jimmy Carter. Congratulations to you both! You are most deserving of this honor.”
