Maryland Field Hockey In Familiar Position Entering Final Month

The University of Maryland field hockey program changed leagues in 2014, moving from the Atlantic Coast Conference to the Big Ten. The players have also changed, but one thing remains the same: the Terps are still an elite team among the NCAA Division I powers.

Head coach Missy Meharg's squad has clinched a tie for the Big Ten's regular-season title and can win the crown outright with a victory against Rutgers Oct. 29. Maryland, which has compiled a 6-1 league record, has already won two regular-season Big Ten titles and one tournament championship since entering the conference.

But the Terps' immediate focus is a meeting with the nation's top-ranked team, the University of Connecticut, Oct. 23. The Huskies, who have won two NCAA championships during the last three years, will play the fifth-ranked Terps at Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex in a game pitting two of the nation's top five teams in the Oct. 18 National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll.
