Carlton Fields is a co-sponsor of the American Bar Association Section of Litigation Appellate Practice Committee’s CLE program, “The Trump Administration and the U.S. Supreme Court: What Does the Future Hold?” The program will be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. November 17, 2016 at the law offices of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP, located at 1875 Pennsylvania Ave., NW in Washington D.C.
Moderated by National Public Radio Justice Correspondent Carrie Johnson, the 90-minute program will feature a bipartisan group of speakers and experts from the legal community who will discuss the role the vacancy played in the presidential campaign and how the nomination process is likely to play out after the presidential election.
The panelists include Reginald J. Brown, Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP; Kathryn Ruemmler, Latham & Watkins LLP; and Edward Whelan, Ethics & Public Policy Center, a former law clerk to Justice Antonin Scalia.
“The sudden and unexpected passing of Justice Scalia triggered a new and heightened awareness of how the 2016 presidential election will impact the U.S. Supreme Court’s future,” said Carlton Fields Shareholder Jason Kairalla, who serves the organizing chair for the event as well as co-chair of the programming subcommittee for the ABA’s Appellate Practice Committee. “This was a major issue on the campaign trail and will continue to have reverberations as President Elect Trump’s nominations will help craft a direction for the Court for generations.”
Carrie Johnson is an award-winning Justice Correspondent for NPR. Prior to joining NPR, Johnson worked at the Washington Post for 10 years, where she covered the FBI, the Justice Department and significant criminal trials. Her work has been honored with awards from the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights, the Society for Professional Journalists and the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. She has been a finalist for the Loeb award for financial journalism and for the Pulitzer Prize in breaking news for team coverage of the massacre at Fort Hood, Texas.
Reginald J. Brown chairs his firm’s Financial Institutions Group and leads its congressional investigations practice. He served as special assistant to the President and associate White House Counsel from 2003 to 2005. He previously served as counsel for Florida Governor Jeb Bush. Mr. Brown serves on the Board of the Republican National Lawyers Association and on the Board of the Excellence in Education Foundation.
Kathryn Ruemmler served for more than five years in the Obama Administration, first as Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General at the Department of Justice and later as Counsel to the President. As Counsel to the President, she advised on judicial nominations and all significant litigation matters, including the most high profile cases heard by the Supreme Court.
Edward Whelan is president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center and directs the Center’s program on The Constitution, the Courts, and the Culture. He is former law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. From 2001 to 2004, Mr. Whelan was the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel in the U.S. Department of Justice and served on Capitol Hill as General Counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary.
