RFK Stadium: 20 Years And A Million Memories Later

Football's version of Camelot ended 20 years ago today.

The Washington Redskins said farewell to RFK Stadium Dec. 22, 1996 with a 37-10 whooping of their rival, the Dallas Cowboys. Fans stormed the field, ripping away the grass to transplant into their own yards. Seats were stolen and so were pennants atop the stadium. Even a team-signed football was pilfered from a player's locker.

It didn't matter RFK wasn't closing. Indeed, it's still hosting soccer games and various events for at least a few more years. But really, the Redskins' departure served to make RFK a synonym for utopia among fans.
