Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP is pleased to announce that Partner John H. Walsh has been elected as a member of the prestigious American Law Institute (ALI). He was nominated by current members of ALI and selected on the basis of professional achievement and demonstrated interest in improving the law.
“This distinction recognizes John’s many contributions and commitment to his clients and the legal community,” said Sutherland Managing Partner Mark D. Wasserman. “We are proud to congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”
The American Law Institute was founded in 1923 in order for legal professionals to discuss and attend to the seemingly complex nature of the law at that time. Today, ALI serves the same general purpose: to decipher the details and change the landscape of American law through research and reform. ALI’s elected membership consists of judges, lawyers and law professors from all regions of the United States and from many foreign countries.
At Sutherland, Mr. Walsh represents broker-dealers, hedge funds, investment advisers and other securities firms in compliance and regulatory issues involving the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). A 23-year veteran of the SEC, his deep insider’s experience and perspective enables him to counsel clients on the full spectrum of securities issues from preventive compliance to cooperation in examinations and defense in enforcement proceedings.
Mr. Walsh’s in-depth knowledge of these topics has made him a sought-after speaker at industry conferences. He is also frequently quoted as an industry thought leader in leading publications and authors a regular column for Corporate Counsel.
While at the SEC, Mr. Walsh played a key role in creating the Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations (OCIE), which administers examinations of U.S. registered securities entities. He designed and implemented the agency’s securities compliance examination practices, first as a senior advisor for compliance policy and then as associate director-chief counsel. In 2009, he served as OCIE’s acting director and led a massive retraining of examination staff on antifraud techniques. While at the SEC, Mr. Walsh also served as Special Counsel to Chairman Arthur Levitt and in the Division of Enforcement.
Mr. Walsh joins Sutherland attorneys Reginald J. Clark, N. Jerold Cohen, Jerome B. Libin and W. Henry Parkman, who were elected as members in previous years.
