Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Google and Netflix have joined the choir of opposition to a broadband bill opponents say would derail efforts to expand government-subsidized internet services across the state.
If the bill passes as currently written, the governor will veto it, McAuliffe spokesman Brian Coy wrote in an email Tuesday.
“The Governor is working hard to expand access to broadband internet across the Commonwealth,” Coy wrote. “That goal requires fostering competition, not stifling it.”
Technology heavy-hitters like Netflix, Google, Nokia and a dozen other organizations also have come out against the broadband bill in a letter sent to Del. Terry Kilgore, R-Scott, who chairs a committee that might hear the proposed legislation.
