Johns Hopkins' Bill Nelson Looking Beyond 600th Career Win

Bill Nelson began his head coaching career when Jimmy Carter was in the White House. Six U.S. presidents have come and gone since then, but Nelson is still on the sidelines.

During the past 37 seasons, Nelson has become one of the nation's most successful basketball coaches. The longtime Johns Hopkins head coach recorded his 600th career victory when the Blue Jays scored a 75-71 triumph at longtime rival Washington College Jan. 18. Nelson became the 18th coach with 600 or more wins in NCAA Division III history.

Nelson was less focused on the record during his milestone victory than others in the arena.

"My college roommate and his wife drove 402 miles from Rochester [N.Y.,] for the game," Nelson said. "The game was excruciating, but it was fun at the end. I was shaking hands with [Washington's coaches and players]. Walking off the floor, my own players started shaking my hand, and then I realized what had happened."
