How A Federal Government Shutdown Affects Hampton Roads

Should the federal government partially shut down, the effects will ripple across Hampton Roads, affecting many government services and paychecks.

But it won’t bring the region’s defense-dependent economy to a standstill.

Late Friday, it appeared Congress and President Donald Trump had failed to make a deal on legislation that authorizes more federal spending. If an agreement is not reached, much of the government runs out of money. They may continue to try over the weekend.

If they fail to pass legislation, hundreds of thousands of federal workers nationwide will be told not to come to work Monday, and a multitude of government agencies would be closed or their services curtailed.

There are large exceptions, including most activities of the Defense and Justice departments.
