CVEC Plans Fiber Network For High-Speed Internet

In 1937, Central Virginia Electric Cooperative formed with the belief electricity could be provided across the rural countryside.

Eight decades later and after growing to serve more than 36,000 members across 14 Virginia counties, the Nelson County-based nonprofit believes reliable, high-speed internet is just as vital, said Gary Wood, president and CEO. CVEC plans to build a fiber network to give members access to the internet, a system Wood said will deliver a minimum speed of 100 megabits per second for high-speed service.

New cable will be installed on and adjacent to overhead and underground power lines, a use of existing infrastructure that makes economic installation possible, according to a news release from the cooperative. CVEC will install and own the fiber-optic cable and offer online services to members through a subsidiary.
