D13 Acquires “Carrier Interferometry” Patent Portfolio for $1.5M

3/21/18

DEPARTMENT 13 INTERNATIONAL LTD (ASX:D13) a cutting-edge developer of counter drone technology, is pleased to announce the acquisition of the “Carrier Interferometry” (CI) Patent Portfolio for US$1.5m.

The CI Patent Portfolio takes the number of D13 owned patents to 16 US Patents and 5 Foreign Patents and the total number of Patents either owned or exclusively licensed from GenghisComm LLC to a total of 39 US Patents, 5 Foreign Patents and 55 Pending Patent Applications.

With the addition of the CI Patent Portfolio to its currently owned and licensed patents, D13 believes it either owns or licenses the technologies that are key to many current and most next-generation Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System (C-UAS) solutions.

D13 is now in a strong position to pursue licensing opportunities with other operators in the C- UAS market, which would potentially provide additional revenue streams for D13.

Counter-UAS Market Licensing Revenue Opportunity

The CI Patent Portfolio contains early disclosures (2002) of software-defined radios and advanced digital signal processing for detection, signal separation, and identification, which are key technologies that D13 is using for drone detection and mitigation.

D13 believes that the most effective “mitigation” strategies employ electronic countermeasures, and most “detection-only" solutions perform characterization of UAS radio signals. Each represents a licensing opportunity following the purchase of the CI Patent Portfolio.

This newly acquired portfolio allows D13 to implement spectral partitioning, blind signal analysis and distributed software analysis technology into MESMER™ and future-MESMER™ systems. This acquisition will now enable D13 to make broad patent claims that will be key to the C-UAS market, covering almost all future CUAS products.

Department 13 CEO, Jonathan Hunter, commented: “By ensuring ownership of key technologies in C-UAS, D13 now has a substantial competitive advantage and will solidify D13’s position as a market leader. We anticipate being able to substantially increase our share of the growing market for C-UAS, not only through our cutting-edge MESMER™ technology but by owning solutions that D13 expects other participants in the market will seek licenses to use.
