There are many challenges facing a head coach when a college or university decides to sponsor a new varsity athletic program.
Simply being competitive is often the biggest of those. But Kenneth DeGraaf, the Mount St. Mary's women's bowling head coach, isn't worried about that.
"I'm bringing in nine good freshmen," DeGraaf said. "They are very talented bowlers. I can compare their averages to the other schools in the Northeast Conference and know that we can be competitive. The biggest challenge for us is that we don't have any upperclassmen for the freshmen to look up to. Not only is our group all freshmen, but they also are the oldest kids on the team, so we are going to need some individuals to take leadership roles and will have to see who steps up in crunch time."
