Towson head football coach Rob Ambrose said the starting quarterback for the Tigers' season opener at Morgan State Sept. 1 will be Ryan Stover, last year's starter, or Tom Flacco, who transferred from Rutgers in June.
"It's really been great competition," Ambrose said on Glenn Clark Radio Aug. 22. "The guys are really grinding it out. It's boiled down to pretty much two in Ryan Stover and Tom Flacco. The team knows it, and they're excited. There's no, 'I like one more than the other' kind of thing. It's, 'Hey, we've got two really good quarterbacks.'"
The 6-foot-4 Stover played in all 11 of Towson's games last year. He threw for 2,001 yards, 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on 55.4 percent passing. He also ran for 465 yards -- which led the team -- and two scores. Towson won three of its final four games to finish the season 5-6, and Stover's improved play during the latter stages of the season was no small reason why.
