Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews has been penalized three times this season for roughing the passer, two of which have been controversial enough to spur consecutive weeks of current and former NFL players questioning the league's new emphasis on protecting the quarterback.
Former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Adalius Thomas doesn't understand how defensive players like Matthews can make a hit anymore.
"I think the NFL is wrong in this. I think that they're taking people's money for no apparent reason," Thomas said on Glenn Clark Radio Sept. 25. "You tell me it's because of safety. It's not because of safety. If you don't want someone to hit the quarterback, put a flag on him and let us pull a flag and do it that way. This right here is not football."
