Mekhi McKinney, a senior point guard and team captain for IDEA Public Charter School's boys' basketball team, has been named the District of Columbia State Athletic Association U.S. Army Impact Player of the Month.
"It's very humbling, being able to work on my game … and also just initiating my leadership skills and being able to be that core leader for IDEA Public Charter School, not just on the court but off the court as well," McKinney said of earning the honor.
The Timberwolves went 23-15 and reached the DCSAA semifinals during the 2015-16 season. McKinney, who was a freshman on the junior varsity team that year, wants to bring that type of winning back to IDEA.
