During his first season as head coach of the Maryland baseball team, Rob Vaughn assumed the senior-laden team he inherited from former coach John Szefc wouldn't need to be challenged because experience would carry it.
But the Terps finished the 2018 season 24-30 -- their lowest win total in six seasons -- and in ninth place (9-14) in the Big Ten, failing to make a conference tournament for the first time since 2013.
"One mistake that I made was I pulled the reins back a little bit and kind of said, 'You know what, they're older and we don't need to push them quite as much. They know,'" Vaughn said. "The reality is an older kid in college baseball is still 22 years old."
