The Maryland men's basketball team has developed a frontcourt-centered identity, and the Terps have done it mostly on the backs of just two players.
Sophomore center Bruno Fernando (14.2 points, 10.5 rebounds per game) and freshman forward Jalen Smith (11.2, 6.6) have led the way for the Terps' big men. Smith, however, hasn't enjoyed the consistency that Fernando has, which has drawn criticism from fans and analysts alike.
"If Jalen Smith continues on this path, he's going to be a major disappointment," ESPN analyst Dan Dakich said on Glenn Clark Radio Feb. 25. "I'm watching him in warmups [against Ohio State Feb. 23], and Bruno Fernando is going 100 miles an hour through everything, and Jalen Smith is going about 5 miles an hour. That's going to come back to haunt that kid, and it's going to haunt the entire team."
