The UMBC men's basketball team's quest to return to the NCAA Tournament fell short when the Retrievers lost, 66-49, to Vermont in the America East championship game March 16.
UMBC fell to 21-13 with the loss. The Retrievers, who have struggled offensively for much of the season, shot just 32.6 percent from the field and were 8-for-26 from 3-point range. Vermont's defense dictated play from the outset by keeping the Retrievers' guards and wings out of the paint and forcing jump shots.
UMBC's top scorers -- forwards Joe Sherburne and Arkel Lamar and guard K.J. Jackson -- combined for 31 points on 10-for-33 shooting.
