In 1990, Baltimore native Daryl Smith made his major-league debut with the Kansas City Royals at age 30 as part of a 16-year pitching career in professional baseball. Now, his main goal is giving back to the community that gave so much to him.
"Everybody has a dream, and I hope it does exist, because mine did," Smith said on The Ross Grimsley Show June 11. "Born and raised here in Baltimore, Maryland, somebody looked out for me on the way up: uncles, karate teachers, basketball coaches, baseball coaches, you name it, principals. So, I ended up reciprocating and giving back to the others as well."
Growing up in Charm City, Smith attended the Community College of Baltimore County, Essex, where he was first noticed by scouts, leading to his sixth-round selection by the Texas Rangers in 1980. Smith was assigned to the Gulf Coast Rangers the same year, beginning his foray into the up-and-down world of the minor leagues.
