Mike Devereaux, formerly an outfielder for the Orioles and currently a minor-league hitting coach, says today's baseball players work on their game differently than the players from his era, with personal coaches and analytics taking on greater significance.
Devereaux has worked as a minor-league coach since 2010, including stints as a field coach with Low-A Delmarva and High-A Frederick, and is now a hitting coach for Low-A Dayton, an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. He said his experience working in the minor leagues has helped show him the differences in today's game compared to his era, particularly with how players are taught by coaches outside of an organization.
"A lot of these guys have individual teachers that they come up with or they go home to that try to teach them how to hit," Devereaux said The Ross Grimsley Show July 23. "A lot of these [coaches] aren't former players and it's very difficult to teach somebody how to hit at the highest level of the game, particularly if you haven't hit there.
