The port of Hampton Roads – and its Virginia International Gateway container terminal, in particular – got some national attention last week.
A group of about 50 people from Washington, D.C. – including Capitol Hill staffers, government officials and media representatives – came to Hampton Roads to get an overview of a working port.
“A lot of them have never been to a seaport,” said Susan Monteverde, vice president of government relations for the Alexandria-based American Association of Port Authorities, which coordinated the port-sponsored event. “They control a lot of the policy related to funding and how we’re going to build our 21st-century infrastructure, so we want to bring them to a port to see this.”
The message was straightforward: U.S. seaports are endangered by a lack of investment.
