Perkins+Will has been selected by the Washington Business Journal as one of the most entrepreneurial and groundbreaking people, products and places in the Washington region for its design of American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) new headquarters, on track to be the first project that is platinum level certified in both LEED-CI and the WELL Building Standard.
The 2016 inaugural Innovation Awards recognize the collaboration between Perkins+Will and its client, ASID, to reinvent an interior space that promotes health and wellness, while employing cutting-edge workplace strategies and measurable models for efficiency, flexibility, and technologically superior work spaces. The new headquarters will serve as a living laboratory to examine the impact of design combined with processes and policies that contribute to greater health and well being. To measure and assess these goals, ASID launched a partnership with Michigan State and Cornell Universities for pre- and post-occupancy studies to advance a model for future workplace innovation, which included biophilia, air purity UV and Charcoal filters, use of materials, configuration that promotes movement, sit/stand desks, circadian lighting.
“Innovation begins with asking, “What if?” But the real magic happens when you figure out how to move beyond “what if” to something that is transformative. In the case of ASID, we integrated design strategies that focus on enhancing health and wellbeing in order to improve, employee engagement, retention, productivity and the bottom line,” said Ken Wilson, FAIA, a Principal and the design director for interiors, with Perkins+Will Washington, D.C. office who led the design team.
The design of the ASID office advances the art and science of workplace design by reducing square footage and real estate costs with greater efficiencies; creating a work environment that promotes better health, translating into greater employee engagement and productivity, and reduced company health-related costs; and supporting specific work tasks with a variety of enabling environments.
Joining Ken Wilson on the design team for the ASID project were David Cordell, and Haley Nelson.
