Transwestern today announces Brendan McCarthy, a former executive who passed away in 1997, was posthumously inducted into the Commercial Real Estate Brokerage Association of Greater Washington’s (CREBA) Hall of Fame. McCarthy was honored Wednesday, Nov. 30, at a reception in Washington, D.C.

Phil McCarthy (no relation), executive managing director and market leader for Transwestern’s Mid-Atlantic region, was mentored early in his career by the late McCarthy. He presented the McCarthy family with a Hall of Fame plaque and reflected on Brendan McCarthy’s impact on the local commercial real estate community.

“Real estate superstars usually are defined by trophy deals and big dollars, but for Brendan the only deal that mattered was the one he made with you,” said McCarthy. “He mentored everyone. He had the ability to lift the weight of the world off your shoulders and onto his.”

The late McCarthy began his commercial real estate career in Washington, D.C., at Shannon and Luchs. He worked at Carey Winston Co., which later merged with Transwestern, for 24 years and was serving as executive vice president and co-chairman on the firm’s Board of Directors when he passed away.

“Brendan was a visionary who recognized the transition of real estate ownership from local investors to global institutions,” said McCarthy. “He was an inspirational leader who took Carey Winston from a small mortgage banking firm to a regional full-service powerhouse and then a national player by leading the charge to merge with Transwestern.”

The late McCarthyplayed on the Boston College football team and is in the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers and went on to play for the Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos before starting his career in commercial real estate.

Other inductees into CREBA’s 2016 Hall of Fame include: Patrick J. Cassidy, John J. Donovan Jr., James L. Eichberg, F. Joseph Moravec, and Peter Speier.
