Howard Hospital Foundation, which provides philanthropic support to Howard County General Hospital, named Tom McGuire to the board of trustees. A researcher, computer security professional and educator, McGuire serves as co-founder and chief technology officer of the Howard County-based cyber security firm Bantam Technologies.

McGuire has had a more than 20-year career in the computer security industry, including roles as a civilian applied research mathematician with the Department of Defense and co-founder of the Columbia-based technology consultancy Vulnerability Research Labs. He also co-founded Jailbreak Brewing Co. in Laurel. In addition, he serves as a computer science and cybersecurity instructor and advisor at Johns Hopkins University.

McGuire’s family connection to Howard County General Hospital began with the birth of their premature twins in 2018, who were initially cared for at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and then in the Howard County General Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

“The level of care and the support system were amazing. Having seen firsthand how important having access to this world-class institution is, I wanted to get involved to help bring awareness to Howard County General Hospital and assist in any way that I could,” McGuire said. “Though our primary experience was with the NICU, I’ve gained an appreciation and a passion for all that the hospital provides, not only care within the hospital, but also their community outreach and education programs. It is really a unique opportunity to have such wonderful care within our community; and I'm happy to support HCGH!”

McGuire received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from William Paterson University and a master’s degree in computer science from Johns Hopkins University.
