The new Midtown Tunnel tube is set to open months ahead of schedule.
Elizabeth River Crossings will open a lane of the second tube early this summer, months ahead of the planned December opening, officials announced Tuesday.
ERC officials say they have made “significant progress” on construction and expect both lanes of the second tube to be fully open as soon as late summer.
Sometime this summer, the westbound lane of traffic (from Norfolk to Portsmouth) in the existing Midtown Tunnel will shift into one lane of the new tunnel. This temporary configuration will allow one lane of travel in each tunnel while work continues in the opposite lane of each tunnel.
