Sticker shock over the price tag associated with suggested renovations to Hampton's 68-year-old War Memorial Stadium may reignite a debate over possibly building a new baseball stadium near downtown Hampton.
The study, conducted by engineering consulting firm AECOM, highlights several areas at the aging stadium off Pembroke Avenue that are in need of major improvement. Parking, field drainage, handicapped accessibility and facilities like restrooms and locker rooms are some of the highlights.
The overall price tag for the renovations suggested in the study: about $9.5 million.
The 3,500-seat stadium, opened in 1948, is owned by the city and has been leased to the Peninsula Pilots since 2000. Several improvements have been done recently, including new roofs over the grandstands and a new press box, but the report makes clear that a bevy of improvements are still required.
