New BVU Authority Board Still Awaiting Appointments

A new BVU Authority Board of Directors is to be sworn into office July 1 — less than a month from now — but so far only one member has been selected.

The clean sweep was mandated by Senate Bill 329, which replaces the current nine-member board with seven new faces, gives the Virginia General Assembly three appointments and redistributes seats from control by the city of Bristol, Virginia, and BVU board, to include representatives from Washington County, Virginia, Abingdon and Scott County.

The legislation came in the wake of a lengthy federal investigation that has seen nine former executives, board chairmen and contractors convicted of an array of corruption charges.

“I think everybody is waiting to see who the Speaker of the House appoints,” Sen. Bill Carrico, R-Galax, said Friday. “I don’t know where the House is but I know a couple of names have been floated around.”
