Work is expected to begin later this month to transform the former Executive Plaza into a downtown boutique hotel.

Once dark, dank and lifeless, the seven-story, 53,000-square-foot space is slated to become The Bristol Hotel with 65 unique guest rooms, fine dining restaurant, ground floor and rooftop bars, meeting space and other amenities, developer Marcus McCall said Tuesday. Originally announced in May 2015, McCall plans to hold a community celebration June 30 to formally kick off the $20 million reconstruction project.

“The next thing you’ll see is work on the building. We’re working on those permits and plans to start that work,” McCall said. “With that you’ll begin to see demolition in the next three or four weeks and we’re on target to open next summer, with the goal to open before the August race [at Bristol Motor Speedway] of 2017.”

McCall is completing the funding package through state and federal historic tax credits. He said contracts have been signed with construction firms J.A. Street of Blountville and Weaver Cooke of Greensboro, N.C., to perform the renovation. Earl Swensson Associates of Nashville is the project architect.
