Local Business Impact Of U.K. 'Brexit' Vote Seen As Muted, For Now

Companies in Virginia sell everything from aircraft parts to wood pellets to potatoes in the United Kingdom, where a public vote Thursday to exit the European Union isn’t likely to significantly stifle demand for those goods.

The vote’s outcome was a surprise, but “I am reminded of the saying that things are never as good nor as bad as they first appear,” said Paul Grossman, vice president for international trade at the Virginia Economic Development Partnership.

The U.K. vote to exit the EU — commonly referred to as Brexit — introduces some uncertainties in international markets and incited an immediate negative reaction in global stock markets on Friday, but the country will remain a key marketplace for Virginia exports, Grossman said.
