Dominion Wins Patent Lawsuit For Smart Grid App

A Dominion Resources Inc. subsidiary won a patent infringement lawsuit Thursday against Washington-based Alstom Grid Inc.

A federal jury awarded $489,000 to Dominion Voltage Inc., part of Richmond-based Dominion Resources Inc., after finding that Alstom infringed on patents surrounding smart grid technology.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, centered on Dominion’s “Edge” products, which are essentially apps used at substations to stabilize voltage and reduce it slightly in areas where customers are equipped with smart meters that constantly monitor their electricity usage. That small reduction in voltage results in lower power bills.
