Foreclosures Fall Nationwide But Rise In Richmond Area

Foreclosure activity in Virginia, including the Richmond area, rose sharply in the first half of the year from the same period a year ago — counter to the national trend, which saw a continued wind down in activity.

Foreclosures in the Richmond area rose 30.5 percent in the first six months of the year from the same period a year ago, according to a report released this morning by RealtyTrac, an Irvine, Calif.-based real estate research firm.

A total of 2,078 households received foreclosure filings — notices of default, auction sales or bank repossessions — in the first six months of the year in the Richmond area. The number represents 0.41 percent of all households with mortgages, according to the report.
