Construction Stifles Middleburg’s Small Businesses

In this ninth month of ongoing construction along Route 50 in Middleburg, small businesses continue to struggle. The $4.1 million project to replace water lines, manage traffic and make streetscape improvements has created an atmosphere of frustration among town council, shop owners and residents.

Cyndi and Dwayne Ellis own local coffee shop Common Grounds on Washington Street (Route 50) along with their son, Christian.

“Communication has been a really big problem the whole time,” said Cyndi Ellis. “I know the infrastructure needed to be done. They could have stopped there.”

Problems with the construction have been numerous for Common Grounds. Christian Ellis feels as though most could have been prevented with more forethought on the part of the Virginia Department of Transportation and the town.
