A handful of "super polluters," factories that spew into the regional air flow zone for the Shenandoah Valley, are affecting the quality of what we breathe in every day.
Federal data shows that a small number of sites contribute a large amount of the nation's air pollution, according to our joint investigation.
A striking one-third of all of this pollution comes from just the top 100 of 15,000 industrial sites with toxic air releases and the top 100 of 7,000 reporting greenhouse-gas pollution.
There are almost 20 factories in our regional air zone that sit on both Top 100 worst lists, based on 2014 data.
