Area Hotels Booked Ahead Of Vice Presidential Debate At Longwood

While Sen. Tim Kaine and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence have been preparing to face off in the vice presidential debate at Longwood University on Tuesday night, the town of Farmville has been doing preparations of its own to accommodate the influx of a few thousand people for the event.

With only approximately 300 hotel rooms available in Farmville, rooms were booked almost immediately after the announcement of the event this time last year. Attending the debate will be 2,500 to 3,000 members of the press, several hundred campaign staffers and potentially up to a thousand interested visitors, Matthew McWilliams, director of communications at Longwood University said Monday.

“It’s a big event and with that comes all kinds of challenges; we have been working hard for the last 12 months, and we have prepared well,” he said. “All the hotel rooms were booked pretty quickly, and so we reached out to some folks in Richmond and Lynchburg to list additional hotels that blocked out rooms.”
