Night racing could soon be a reality at the Martinsville Speedway, thanks to a $5 million investment. Speedway President Clay Campbell announced on Wednesday afternoon that the facility will be adding light-emitting diode (LED) lights for a project called “Light Up Martinsville.”
Starting October 31, Missouri-based Graybar will start installing a permanent lighting solution for the Speedway, making Martinsville the first motorsport facility anywhere with 100 percent LED lighting, according to Campbell.
Campbell reminded reporters of how the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 ended last year, with Jeff Gordon winning as twilight approached. Afterward, Campbell said, he heard a quote from Dale Earnhardt Jr., saying the track could use some lights.
And so, with Earnhardt on hand for the announcement, Campbell presented the largest capital project in the history of the Martinsville Speedway.
