Proposal To Extend I-64 Widening To Richmond Hits Snag

A proposal to extend the Interstate 64 widening all the way to Richmond, closing the 29-mile gap between two projects, will likely not be considered for state funding this cycle.

Several Hampton Roads leaders have been asking the Commonwealth Transportation Board to submit the project for consideration under its Smart Scale program, but Transportation Secretary Aubrey Layne, who chairs the board, said that's not in the cards.

"We already have over 30 miles of construction on I-64," Layne said. "I don't think submitting any more at the present time makes any sense. With the competition ... it would not score well."
