Continental, Thomas Nelson Community College Partner To Train Machinists

The Continental plant in Newport News is partnering with Thomas Nelson Community College to help train future machinists inside its facility to supply the Peninsula's growing demand for skilled workers.

Continental is hiring machinists — workers who use machines to make metal parts and components — and needs a way to ensure it will have enough skilled workers to succeed retiring employees in addition to helping fuel company growth, Continental's Senior Human Resources Manager Michael Lindsey said.

The Newport News plant, part of the engine systems unit of Continental Automotive Systems Inc.'s powertrain division, is known for producing fuel injectors and other parts as a supplier to car manufacturers. Those fuel injection systems are comprised of small metal components that need to be made with computer-controlled expert precision to work efficiently and effectively.
