Hampton Roads Coal Exports Fell For The 3rd Year In A Row. What's Fueling The Slide?

Only a few years ago, anybody crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel couldn’t help but notice the coal ships anchored off Lynnhaven, waiting to load up.

Sometimes it looked like a small armada – as many as 20 or so ships hovering on the horizon.

But then they seemed to disappear, moved to an anchorage off Cape Charles at the direction of the Coast Guard.

The vanishing act, it turns out, was assisted by global economic forces as well, as the coal market grew more competitive.
