The 1,000-point milestone has long been regarded as validation for an outstanding basketball career. Even with college hoopsters playing more games than ever before, it still remains a hard-to-reach goal.

Three UMBC men's basketball players are closing in on the milestone. Senior guard Will Darley and redshirt junior guard Jairus Lyles nearly joined the club during the Retrievers' 65-52 win against visiting Stony Brook Feb. 22. Darley, a graduate of Dulaney High School, scored nine points to bring his career total to 999. Lyles, from DeMatha Catholic High School, now has 997 career points after his 13-point effort against the Seawolves. Junior guard Rodney Elliott, who totaled four points in UMBC's win, will enter the final regular-season game with 987 career markers.

The most recent UMBC player to reach the 1,000-point mark was forward Chase Plummer, who scored 1,307 points from 2010-14. When the trio of Darley, Lyles and Elliott reach the mark, they will be the 18th, 19th and 20th players in UMBC history to do so.
