TAP Accepts Offer To Sell The Dumas Center But It's Not Naming Buyer

Total Action for Progress has a buyer for the historic Dumas Center for Artistic & Cultural Development, according to a Wednesday news release from the Roanoke nonprofit.

But the buyer isn’t a local community group that’s made two offers and held a fundraiser on Henry Street on Saturday.

TAP, citing a confidentiality agreement regarding the sale, did not divulge the name of the buyer in its news release. “TAP believes that the new owners of the Dumas will keep the rich history of the Dumas alive so that the community will enjoy its presence for years to come,” the release said.

The only known offers for the former hotel and nightspot on Henry Street in the historic Gainsboro section of the city came from a group called Dumas Hotel Legacy Inc. The group considers the building a “sacred” final piece of the once vibrant black community and commercial district that was decimated by urban renewal in the 1960s.
