Public Split On Proposed Rules For Transient Lodging

Albemarle County residents have mixed opinions on whether changes to regulations for transient lodging, such as Airbnb, should be made.

County staff has completed nine public input sessions on the topic so far this month — one for existing hosts and operators of home-based transient lodging, three for residents in the rural area and five for development-area residents at meetings of the county’s various community advisory committees.

Currently, if inspection requirements are met, the zoning ordinance allows for anyone with a single-family detached home to rent out as many as five rooms, but an owner or manager must be present in the unit.

Owners in the rural area can rent out a second unit on their properties, and they can use accessory structures for guestrooms — renting out as many as 10 rooms on their parcel — but the owner or manager must reside on the parcel.
