Macon Brock died in his wife’s arms Saturday morning.

It was 8:29 a.m., Joan Brock said, and her husband succumbed to complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a disease that deteriorates the lungs. He was 75.

“It was good because he was at home, he was in his own bed and he was with me,” his wife said Sunday. “He suffered a lot. He was very brave and very courageous and he never complained.”

Macon Brock was a pillar in the Hampton Roads business and philanthropic communities. As a co-founder and former CEO of Dollar Tree, Brock lived what many believed to be the American dream. Not only that, he wanted to make a difference in the community. He and his wife were known to donate to educational and environmental causes, as well as the arts community. They served on various boards at colleges and community and environmental organizations.
