Appalachian Power Signs Contract With Solar Energy Developer

Appalachian Power has agreed to purchase electricity from a solar generation project as it continues a shift from coal-burning power plants to renewable energy.

The 15-megawatt Depot Solar Center will be built and operated in Campbell County by Coronal Energy, Appalachian said in an announcement this week.

It will mark the utility’s first venture in industrial-scale solar power.

“Appalachian Power is excited to announce the Depot Solar Center as we move forward with the diversification of our generation portfolio,” Chris Beam, the company’s president and chief operating officer, said in a statement announcing the deal.
