Loudoun County Sees Resistance As It Looks To Regulate Airbnb, Other Short-Term Rentals

For $30 a night, you can rent out a private bedroom for two equipped with a full bathroom and TV near Dulles Airport in Sterling using the popular online lodging site Airbnb.

Or for a two-night minimum stay, a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath barnhouse about two miles east of Middleburg could be yours for $250 a night using another online lodging site called VRBO.

What these online rental options have in common is that they are part of a growing trend within the shared economy where travelers can choose where they want to stay virtually anywhere in the world simply by clicking “book” on their computers.

Another thing they have in common is that they are considered “short-term rentals” by the county and are currently in the process of being heavily regulated.
