Update: Dr. Dan Carey, Centra’s chief medical officer, was appointed Virginia’s next secretary of health and human resources by Gov.-elect Ralph Northam on Wednesday.

Carey will replace William Hazel Jr., who first was appointed to the position under former Gov. Bob McDonnell and continued to serve in the post under Gov. Terry McAuliffe. Carey is the second person from Lynchburg selected for a key position in the Northam administration over the past week; former state delegate Shannon Valentine was named Virginia’s next transportation secretary Dec. 13.

Since 2014, Carey, a cardiologist, has been the senior vice president and chief medical officer for Centra, responsible for information technology services, patient quality and safety efforts, performance improvement initiatives and functions of the medical staff at Centra’s three acute care facilities.
